How to Wear Your Handmade Jewelry

Wearing properly your handmade jewelry is one of the most important steps in increasing its longevity. Simple steps like taking off your bracelet while washing the dishes or removing your earrings while combing your hair mean a lot to your beaded jewelry. These are simple everyday activities that damage the leather, pearls and the soft gemstones, and scratch the sterling silver.

  • To prevent discoloration, harming the surface and dulling the luster of your pearls, gemstones, and leather don’t forget to remove them before exercising or doing strenuous activity leading to perspiration.
  • Remove your jewelry for sleeping (except for rings and stud earrings). Movement during sleep causes stress on all moving parts.
  • Don’t put your handmade jewelry on before putting your make up, perfume and hairspray because pearls and porous gemstones tend to absorb them. In addition to that, any type of chemical can damage the luster of your favorite piece of jewelry, so don’t wear it while cleaning and washing dishes.
  • Try to avoid blow-drying your hair while wearing beaded jewelry, since extreme temperatures can erode pearl and gemstone surfaces and burn the leather.
  • Also, consider taking off your necklace and earrings in a hair salon while having your hair colored, because the coloring agents penetrate into the leather, pearls and the soft gemstone and change their luster and color.
  • Sterling silver, gemstones, pearls can easily be scratched or broken. Consider taking off your beaded jewelry while doing activities where it can be knocked against hard surface or caught on a hook.
  • And last but not least - enjoy wearing your beaded jewelry! A smile from you makes it look even more glamorous!
